August & September Police reports
The following police reports are provided by the Charleston County Sheriff’s office:
8/2/08 – (Seabrook) An officer was contacted in reference to a complainant reporting that one of their employees had attempted to steal an axe from the job site. He was observed by fellow workers, who wised to remain anonymous, placing the axe in the trunk of his vehicle. The suspect was confronted and fired and the complainant contacted the police department for documentation of the incident.
8/4/08 – (Seabrook) An officer responded to an agency assist with EMS concerning a jogger who apparently had a heart attack. When the office arrived, the deceased was lying on his back on the ground with a blanket covering him. The EMT with EMS stated that the deceased was found in a Port O’Let on a job site on Seabrook Island Road. The deceased was found sitting upright in the Port O’Let dressed in jogging clothes. EMS found the deceased warm to the touch and attempted to revive him without success. The victim’s wife was on the scene when the officer arrived. She stated her husband had a long history of hearth problems and that he was expecting “something like this to happen”.
8/12/08 – (Seabrook) The victims stated that they are currently building a residence and that sometime between 10:00pm and 9:00am, someone came onto the property and stole about 15 sheets of copper, each about 15 feet long and a foot wide. However, several other items of high value that were sitting in the area were undisturbed.
8/14/08 – (Kiawah) An officer met with the victim at the incident location in reference to a vehicle mishap. While the victim was playing golf, a light pole fell on his vehicle. The vehicle was damaged on the hood and the top of the van.
8/18/08 – (Seabrook) An officer responded to an incident involving a canine. The officer spoke with the victim, who stated that while she was on the beach with her dogs, another, smaller canine charged towards her. The complainant stated that the smaller canine acted aggressively toward her canines and stated that while she was holding her dogs from attacking the other dog, she fell and injured her hip. The victim refused to be seen by EMS. The officer spoke with the subject, who stated that she did indeed allow her canine off of the leash, but did not think it would act aggressively towards other dogs, as it has never happened in the past.
8/24/08 – (Kiawah) The complainant advised the responding officer that a purple two door Chevrolet cavalier failed to stop at the main gate. The same complaint came from the rear gate. The suspect vehicle passed the officer on Kiawah Island Parkway and a traffic stop was conducted. The suspect stated that he was trying to get to Summerville from Old Pond Road. A license check revealed that the suspect had a suspended driver’s license and his plates were reported as stolen. The vehicle was confiscated and the suspect properly restrained, transported and lodged in the County jail.
8/30/08 – (Kiawah) An officer responded to the incident location in reference to a vehicle hitting the bridge. Upon the officer arrival, he observed the subject sitting in his vehicle and that the right front wheel was missing from striking the bridge. The officer detected a strong alcoholic odor coming from the subject’s vehicle and the subject appeared to be disoriented with slurred speech. He was also unsteady on his feet and the subject was placed under arrest for DUI. The subject was properly restrained and searched prior to transport to the Charleston County Detention Center, where he was administered a breathalyzer test that revealed a BAC of .20. Witness #1 stated that the subject pulled out in front of him at Kiawah Island Parkway and Freshfields. The subject made a wide turn into the oncoming lane, ran off the road twice and accelerated just before striking the bridge.
8/31/08 – (Seabrook) An officer met with the complainant at the Seabrook main gate regarding subjects attempting to gain access to Seabrook Island and carrying open containers of beer. The subjects were detained until the responding officer’s arrival, upon which the officer observed both subjects and the odor of alcohol emanated from both subjects. The subjects were taken into custody and transported and lodged into the detention center without incident.
9/4/08 – (Kiawah) An officer responded to a call from a complainant regarding a burglary. Upon arrival, the officer did a walkthrough and his initial impression was that an unknown subject entered the area through the ceiling, as tiles were broken down out of the ceiling at office #7 and the desktop computer and monitor were missing. There was also a broken window leading into office #1. Office #10, the door had been forced open and the desk and bookshelves had been disturbed and there was ceiling tile dust throughout the room. Office #9 had footprints on the wall approximately ¾ of the way up the wall. The office processed the scene taking photographs of the scene and the officer retrieved three blood drops. After processing the scene, the officer interviewed some of the staff and learned that subject #1 had arrived at the incident location at noon to work and discovered the front door was unlocked and the window on the left side of the door was cracked. Subject #1 did not contact Kiawah Security or the Charleston County Sheriff’s department, but stated he locked the door when he departed. The next day, Kiawah Security called maintenance and the broken glass was cleaned up and the window covered with a piece of plywood. The Charleston County Sheriff’s department was not advised of the damage to the property. The day after that, Subject #2 arrived on the scene first to open the business for the day and discovered the burglary. The officer spoke with Subject #3 and he stated that the stolen computer did not contain any sensitive material and was also password protected.
9/9/08 – (Kiawah) The victim contacted the on-duty officer’s desk in reference to a disturbance. The victim stated that she was working on one of her client’s residences when her previous employer approached her outside the residence and began yelling obscenities. The victim stated that the subject left the scene without further incident, but that she had been continuously harassed by the subject since she left his employment and started her own business.
9/9/08 – (Kiawah) The victim called the sheriff’s department and reported hat his shed had been broken into and some tools stolen. The officer made contact with him and he showed the officer the plastic shed that he keeps locked. Investigation showed that someone had pried at the side of the shed and broken the doors off the side. Once entry was gained, the suspect stole some of the victim’s tools as well as a tool bag that belonged to the suspect. The victim thinks that the suspect stole the tools and that the suspect had worked for him up until the past weekend when the victim had fired him. The suspect had left a tool bag in the shed when he was fired and several days ago, called the victim to come get the bag. The night before, the victim secured the shed and when he came into work, he found the shed open and his tools missing, as well as the aforementioned tool bag. Not of the other workers tools were stolen.
9/11/08 – (Kiawah) An officer met with the victim in reference to a theft of money. The victim stated that between 9:00am on June 15 and 11:00pm on June 20, some unknown person(s) removed $750 cash from the dresser drawer in her room. The victim stated that the only other people that were known to be in the house were employees of the home’s employed maid service.
9/11/08 – (Kiawah) An officer met with the victim at the main gate at Kiawah Island in reference to a vehicle being damaged. The victim stated that between 1:55 pm and 2:05 pm, their vehicle, which was parked in the driveway of the residence they were renting was hit by a golf ball, causing an estimated $500 in damage.
9/23/08 – (Seabrook) The complainant stated that she left her residence around 8:30am and returned shortly before 5:00pm. When she returned to the residence, the subject was still laying in bed; as he had been that morning when she left. The complainant tried waking the subject up, but was unable to and called EMS. The complainant stated that the subject had been sick for several years and had been in and out of the hospital due to complications with his lungs and stomach. EMS confirmed the death.
9/24/08 – (Kiawah) The reporting deputy responded to the incident location after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance from Kiawah Island Security. The officer first spoke with subject #1, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated. The officer attempted to question subject #1 about the incident, but due to her level of intoxication, the officer could not obtain much information regarding the incident. She only stated of being involved in a verbal argument with her husband, subject #2, and that she was okay. The officer then spoke with subject #2, who stated they both had been drinking downstairs in the dining area. He stated he had to physically carry subject #1 back upstairs to the hotel room. He stated while attempting to retrieve the door key from his pocket and trying to support subject #1 at the same time, he unintentionally dropped her on the floor. He stated as a result of the commotion, Kiawah Security reported to the room. Subject #2 stated he voluntarily went to another room to spend the night. The officer did not observe any physical signs among either party, nor within the room, which did not support Subject #2’s statement. |
